Why does bite force differ between dog breeds?

Cane Corsos and other Mastiff types reach 400–700 PSI. Their ancestors were war dogs and gladiator fighters, tasks that required enormous jaw pressure.

American Pit Bull Terriers achieve about 235 PSI. This is less than often claimed, but their bite tenacity makes them dangerous. They let go less frequently than other breeds.

What do PSI values mean for everyday life with a dog?

Most PSI figures on the internet are estimates without a scientific basis. Reliable studies exist for only a few breeds, and testing conditions vary greatly. A stressed dog bites differently than a relaxed one.

For dog owners, PSI values are less relevant than biting behaviour. A Chihuahua with 50 PSI can still cause significant injuries, especially to children. A well-socialised Mastiff with 500 PSI is less dangerous than an aggressive small dog.

More important is bite inhibition: well-trained dogs control their strength automatically. They can carefully take treats or play-bite gently, even though they could theoretically be much stronger.

Can bite force be trained?

Maximum bite force is genetically limited; jaw musculature cannot be built up like a bicep. What can be trained, however, is control and endurance when holding on.

Schutzhund sports use bite sleeves and arms to improve grip technique. It is not about more strength, but about correct gripping and safe releasing on command.

Tug games can strengthen the chewing muscles, but do not overdo it. Too intense training can cause jaw joint problems, especially in young dogs with still-growing bones.

Is a strong bite automatically dangerous?
