Why rundum.dog exists

rundum.dog was founded on 9 August 2021, out of frustration. Anyone searching for a puppy back then found mostly ads, marketplaces and lists of shopping links on the first pages of search results. Good information existed, but not where people make their decision. That gap is exactly what illegal puppy trafficking lives on: sick animals, forged vaccination records, buyers who only realise afterwards what has happened.

Our idea was simple. If reliable information is easier to find than the dubious offer, fewer people buy from the wrong source. This became the principle behind every page: animal welfare through knowledge. We inform instead of condemning. Once you understand why a dog with a shortened muzzle can hardly breathe, you choose your next dog differently.

What we want to achieve

Our goal fits into one sentence. You should be able to make better informed decisions, for yourself and for your dog. This applies not only when buying a puppy, but to a dog’s whole life, from the first thought to the farewell. We help dogs through the decisions their people make.

  • Before the dog: You know which breed suits your everyday life, how to spot a reputable breeder and why a dog from an animal shelter can be a good choice.
  • With the dog: You find reliable answers on health, nutrition, training and care, without anyone trying to sell you something on the side.
  • Out and about: You discover places, services and people in your region that welcome dogs.

We do not measure our success by clicks alone. What matters more is whether someone can make a better decision after reading than before. That is why our Wiki articles name the sources they rely on. If someone points out a mistake, we correct it.

What we offer

We bring together on one platform what is otherwise scattered. On the German-language site, the Wiki explains more than 2,500 terms. Add to that a steady stream of new guides, around 1,700 excursion destinations, several hundred events and almost 2,000 listings, from service providers to dog-friendly restaurants, across the German-speaking region, clearly laid out on a map. Most of our content is in German. A growing part of it, including the Wiki, is available in English.

What we deliberately do not do

A platform that wants to help people get a dog must not earn money from selling dogs itself. That is why we follow fixed rules.

  • We do not sell dogs and we do not earn money from dog sales.
  • A higher tier does not move a listing further up. All listings appear in lists and on the map according to the same rules.
  • We do not disguise advertising as advice.
  • We do not pillory anyone. Even if you already have a dog from a questionable source, you will find help here, not blame.

Who is behind rundum.dog and how we are funded is explained in detail on the page About rundum.dog.

Why free?

All guides, Wiki articles and directories are free and can be read without registering. Education only works if it reaches many people, and a paywall would shut out exactly those who need a quick answer right now. Founded in Switzerland, built for the whole German-speaking region.

How you can take part

rundum.dog gets better when many people help. There are three ways to take part.

  • Share: Send an article to someone who is thinking about getting a dog. That is an effective way to help against puppy trafficking.
  • Report: If you notice a mistake or outdated information, write to us via the contact page.
  • Support: Tell others about rundum.dog.

For service providers

If you work with dogs, rundum.dog is the right place for you. List your business and show your services to people who are looking for offers in their region. Whether dog training school, animal shelter, boarding kennel, breeder or dog shop, the same rules apply to everyone. Registration and listing currently run on our German-language site.
