If a dog suddenly arches its back like a bow and can hardly move normally anymore, this is not the owner’s imagination – it is a real warning signal. The so-called carp back, medically known as kyphosis, describes exactly this upwardly curved spine. Slipped discs, arthritis, spondylosis or injuries may be behind it. What is a carp back in dogs?
The term sounds almost cute, but it isn’t. A carp back describes a clearly visible curvature of the spine upwards – the dog’s back actually resembles the curved back of a carp. Medically, this is called kyphosis.
This posture is no coincidence and no quirk. Most often, there is a solid problem behind it: muscle tension, disc damage, arthritis or degenerative changes such as spondylosis. The dog hunches because it is in pain and unconsciously tries to reduce the pressure on the affected area.
If you observe such a posture in your own dog, you should not wait. A vet visit is necessary to find the exact cause – and thus the right treatment.
Symptoms of the clinical picture
The most noticeable sign is the curvature itself. But it rarely comes alone.
Dogs with a carp back do not like to move. Stairs, jumps, getting up quickly – all of this is avoided or requires visible effort. Many appear stiff, almost frozen, and also lie down only hesitantly. This is not due to laziness, but because every movement can hurt.
Touching the back is often not tolerated. A dog that otherwise likes to be stroked turns away or growls – this is a pain reaction, not bad behaviour. Sometimes an altered head and neck posture is also noticeable: the dog stretches its neck downwards, as if wanting to relieve the back.
In more serious cases, the hind legs weaken. The gait appears insecure, sometimes even slightly lame. This is a sign that nerves may be affected – and then every hour counts until diagnosis.
In short: If several of these signs occur together, the vet is not an option, but mandatory.
Causes for a carp back in dogs
The list of possible causes is long – and that makes the diagnosis so important, as the treatment depends entirely on what lies behind it.
Disc problems
If you have a Dachshund, you may already know the topic. Dogs with long backs are particularly susceptible to slipped discs, so-called discopathies. A displaced or bulging disc presses on nerves, which causes considerable pain – and the dog arches its back as a protective reaction. Without treatment, it will not get better.
Osteoarthritis and joint problems
Arthritis is insidious. The joints – especially in the spine – deteriorate over years, the pain increases, and eventually the dog changes its posture to spare the worst areas. Older dogs are particularly affected, but younger animals with genetic predisposition or after injuries can also develop arthritis early.
Hip dysplasia
Large breeds such as German Shepherds or Labradors know this problem well. Faulty development of the hip joint alters the entire body posture – the dog compensates, and in doing so, the spine can fall into kyphosis. It is a chain reaction.
Spondylosis
In spondylosis, bony growths form on the vertebral bodies. This restricts mobility, causes pain and can lead to a permanently curved back in the long term. Large and older dogs are disproportionately often affected here.
Inflammatory diseases of the spine
Discospondylitis – a bacterial or fungal inflammation of the discs and adjacent vertebral bodies – is less well known, but serious. The inflammation causes severe pain, the dog adopts a protective posture. Quick action is required here, as an infection must be treated.
Neurological diseases and disorders
The cauda equina compression syndrome, for example, narrows the nerves in the lower spinal region. Severe pain, weakness in the hind legs, a typical protective posture – this sounds like a carp back, but has a neurological cause. Slipped discs with pressure on the spinal cord can also produce similar pictures.
Injuries and trauma
An accident, a bad fall, an overly intense training session – sometimes the trigger is concrete and clearly definable in time. If muscles, ligaments or the spine itself have been affected, the dog protects itself through a curved posture. This is a direct protective reaction to the pain.
Muscle tension
Chronic tension can arise from overexertion, incorrect movement patterns or even constant stress. When the back muscles are hard as a board, the dog will eventually automatically adopt an antalgic posture – and this can become entrenched over time.
Incorrect loading and overloading
Too much, too fast, too often: dogs that are regularly overwhelmed – through incorrect training, constant jumping or carrying loads – can develop kyphosis. The spine and muscles eventually give way.
Malformations
Some dogs are born with a predisposition. In particular, Bulldogs and Pugs are prone to so-called hemivertebrae – individual vertebrae are congenitally underdeveloped. This can lead to back problems even in puppyhood and, in the worst case, mean a permanently curved back.
Diagnosis & treatment of kyphosis in dogs
Diagnosis
The vet begins with a clinical examination: posture, mobility, palpating the spine for pain points or tension. This provides initial clues, but imaging techniques are needed for a confirmed diagnosis. X-rays show bony changes, while an MRI provides more detailed insights – showing whether intervertebral discs, malformations or degenerative conditions such as spondylosis are the problem. If nerve involvement is suspected, an additional neurological examination may be necessary.
Treatment
Treatment always follows the cause – there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers are used for acute pain to provide the dog with relief first. Physiotherapy helps to specifically strengthen the back muscles and relieve tension – this is often underestimated, but effective.
In more serious problems such as intervertebral disc herniation or congenital malformations, surgery may be the only sensible option. In addition, an adapted exercise and nutrition programme helps to control body weight and relieve pressure on the spine in the long term.
Every treatment should be individually tailored to the dog. What works for one may not be the right approach for the next.

Waiting and seeing is not a good strategy.

- No overexertion: Constant jumping, heavy loads or excessive training put lasting strain on the back.
- Regular vet visits: Those who check early find problems before they become major.
What is the prognosis for a dog with kyphosis?
This depends heavily on what triggered the kyphosis and how advanced it is. Many dogs lead a largely normal life with the right treatment – especially when the problem is detected early. Pain can often be significantly reduced, improving quality of life. In severe cases or advanced malformations, long-term adjustments may be necessary.
