Skull Structure
The dog's skull structure is a formation consisting of several interconnected bones that protects the brain and sensory organs and serves as the basis for chewing, sniffing, barking and facial expressions.

A dog’s skull is far more than a protective bony helmet. It is the housing for the brain, supports the sensory organs and is simultaneously the basis for everything that makes a dog what it is – its chewing, sniffing, barking and facial expressions. And: depending on the breed, this skull looks so different that one hardly believes it is the same species.
Structure of the Skull
The dog skull consists of several interconnected bones that form two main sections – one for the brain, one for the face.
Neurocranium (Braincase)
The braincase encloses the brain and protects it reliably. It is composed of several fused bones:
- Frontal bone (Os frontale)
- Parietal bone (Os parietale)
- Occipital bone (Os occipitale)
- Temporal bone (Os temporale)
Together, they form the cranial cavity – a well-protected space in which important nerves and blood vessels run alongside the brain.
Viscerocranium (facial skull)
The facial skull forms everything we perceive as the dog’s face: muzzle, jaws, nose. Involved are, among others:
- Upper jaw (maxilla)
- Lower jaw (mandible)
- Nasal bones (os nasale)
- Cheekbone (zygomatic bone)
This section is responsible for chewing, breathing and smelling – i.e. for a large part of what a dog gets through in its daily life.
Functions of the skull structure
Protection of the brain and sensory organs
The skull protects the sensitive brain and vital organs such as eyes, olfactory organs and ears from injury. The robust bone structure absorbs shocks and prevents damage – at least to a certain extent.
Support for the jaws and teeth
The upper and lower jaws carry the entire dental apparatus. The jaw muscles, which attach to the skull, generate the force for chewing and breaking down food. Barking – i.e. the dog’s vocal language – also depends directly on this structure.
Airways and sense of smell
Within the skull run the nasal passages and paranasal sinuses, which enable breathing and the sense of smell. Dogs have particularly well-developed nasal passages – no wonder, their olfactory organ is their most important connection to the world.
Shape and communication
Facial expressions also depend on the skull. Ears, eyes, corners of the mouth – all this moves along the bony basic structure and conveys emotional states. Anyone who has ever observed how a dog folds its ears or squints its eyes sees the skull indirectly at work.
Different head shapes and their characteristics
The skull structure varies considerably between breeds. There are three basic types:
Dolichocephalic (long-skulled)
Breeds such as the Afghan Hound or the Collie have a long, narrow skull. The elongated nasal area provides space for well-developed nasal passages, which can improve respiratory performance and make these dogs particularly fine-nosed scent hounds.
Brachycephalic (short-headed)
Pug, French Bulldog, Boxer – they all have a short, broad skull with a shortened muzzle. This gives them the characteristic, baby-faced appearance. The downside: nasal passages and airways are compressed, which can lead to breathing problems and other health challenges.
Mesocephalic (medium-headed)
The Labrador Retriever or the Beagle represent the balanced skull type – neither too long nor too short. Muzzle and jaws are well-proportioned, both for chewing and for a reliable sense of smell.
Health problems associated with skull structure
Some breeds carry their skull shape as a risk factor. Four problem areas occur particularly frequently:
Brachycephalic syndrome
Short-nosed dogs are prone to breathing problems, which are summarised under the term brachycephalic airway syndrome. Shortened nasal passages, narrowed nostrils and a displaced soft palate make breathing noticeably more difficult. Affected dogs often breathe loudly, snore and tire more quickly during physical exertion. In severe cases, surgical correction may be necessary.
Dental problems
A short jaw simply offers less space for the teeth. In brachycephalic breeds, teeth are therefore often crowded together – which increases the risk of tartar, gum disease and tooth loss. Regular check-ups pay off here.
Hydrocephalus
Toy breeds such as the Chihuahua are more susceptible to hydrocephalus – colloquially known as water on the brain. Excess fluid accumulates in the brain, increasing pressure in the skull. This can lead to neurological symptoms such as seizures, headaches and behavioural disturbances.
Skull injuries
Accidents and trauma can directly damage the skull. Dogs with thinner or smaller skull shapes are more susceptible to skull fractures or injuries from impacts.
Diagnosis and treatment of skull problems
If a dog shows signs of problems with its skull structure, the vet has various diagnostic options available:
- Clinical examination: The head and skull are palpated and assessed for abnormalities.
- X-ray and CT scan: These imaging techniques allow a detailed view of the bone structure – particularly if fractures, deformities or anomalies are suspected.
- MRI examination: In cases of neurological problems such as hydrocephalus or tumours, MRI helps to assess the condition of the brain more accurately.
Treatment depends on the specific findings. Sometimes conservative measures suffice, in other cases surgical interventions are necessary – such as correcting the airways in brachycephalic dogs or treating hydrocephalus.
