Jowl

The jowl refers to the characteristic skin folds on the neck and upper chest area of the dog, which are particularly pronounced in certain breeds.

Why do some dogs have a jowl?

The jowl is caused by excess, loose skin in the neck and chest area. It is genetically determined and was deliberately preserved or enhanced in many breeds. In hunting dogs such as the Bloodhound, the loose skin originally helped to collect scent particles and direct them to the nose area.

The jowl is particularly pronounced in breeds such as the Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Newfoundland and Dogue de Bordeaux. While a Bloodhound often develops deep, characteristic folds, the jowl in the Newfoundland is broader and less folded.

How do I care for the jowl correctly?

You should clean the dewlap every two to three days. Use a damp, lint-free cloth and gently wipe between the folds without pulling on the skin. Afterwards, dry all areas thoroughly. Moisture in the folds quickly promotes bacterial infections.

For stubborn dirt, a mild, pH-neutral dog shampoo solution helps. Rinse thoroughly and dry the areas completely. Some owners apply a thin layer of baby powder after cleaning, but this only works on completely dry skin.

What problems can occur with the dewlap?

Skin fold dermatitis is the most common problem in dogs with a pronounced dewlap. You will recognise it by reddish discoloration, an unpleasant odour or moist spots in the folds. If these signs are left untreated, bacterial or fungal infections can develop.

In addition, there may be ingrown hairs or minor injuries from the dog scratching. Overweight dogs are more frequently affected because the additional weight deepens the folds and worsens air circulation.

When should I see the vet?

Consult a vet if there is a persistent unpleasant odour from the skin folds, purulent discharge occurs or your dog scratches its neck noticeably often. A veterinary examination is also advisable in cases of swelling or open wounds in the dewlap.
