Maltipoo – The Charming Mixed-Breed Dog with a Big Heart
A Maltipoo looks like a living cuddly toy but comes with specific demands: intensive care, strong attachment to people, and high ongoing costs.

A Maltipoo is a cross between a Maltese and a Poodle. Its appearance resembles a cuddly toy, but behind the teddy-bear face lies a dog with its own mind and specific needs.
What Is the Character of a Maltipoo Really Like?
Maltipoos are affectionate to the point of clinginess. They follow their primary caregiver from room to room and often develop a strong fixation. This can become problematic if the dog cannot be left alone.
Their intelligence is both a curse and a blessing. An under-stimulated Maltipoo becomes creative – rarely in a way that suits the owner. Chewing shoes, tearing wallpaper, or barking for hours are typical pastimes of a bored Maltipoo.
Their reaction to strangers varies: some are immediately friendly, others need time. Socialisation during the first few months of life determines whether you end up with a confident or rather anxious dog.
What Daily Care Does a Maltipoo Need?
The coat is a full-time job. Depending on inheritance, the dog has silky Maltese fur or curly Poodle hair, sometimes a mix of both. Without daily brushing, the hair mats within days.
A grooming appointment is due every six to eight weeks. A professional cut costs between 40 and 80 CHF, depending on the region. Attempting it yourself risks a coat disaster that takes months to grow back.
The eyes often tear up, leaving brownish stains in the fur. These discolourations can only be removed with special cleaning products and lots of patience – sometimes not at all.
How Healthy Are Maltipoos as Hybrid Dogs?
The Maltipoo inherits the health problems of both parent breeds, not just the advantages. Patellar luxation – a dislocating kneecap – is common and may require surgery.
Eye diseases such as progressive retinal atrophy or cataracts occur. Heart problems, particularly mitral valve insufficiency, can become an issue in old age. A Maltipoo lives on average 12 to 15 years, provided it stays healthy.
The claim that hybrid dogs are inherently healthier is a myth. Without health tests of the parent animals, you’re buying a mystery bag with unknown contents.
Are Maltipoos Really Suitable for Allergy Sufferers?
No dog is 100% hypoallergenic. Maltipoos shed less hair than other breeds but still produce dander and saliva – the most common allergy triggers.
The ‘Poodle gene’ can reduce allergen load, but doesn’t have to. Only prolonged contact reveals whether you react to the specific dog. A quick test at the breeder’s is insufficient.
Some allergy sufferers get along well with Maltipoos, while others react just as strongly as they would to other dogs. A trial period before making a final decision is advisable.
How much does a Maltipoo cost in the first year?
Puppy price: 1,500 to 2,500 CHF from reputable breeders. Cheaper offers usually come from multipliers who do not conduct health tests.
Initial equipment: 200 to 400 CHF for a basket, toys, leash and food. Grooming supplies: 100 to 150 CHF for brushes, combs and special shampoos.
Ongoing costs: food 30 to 50 CHF per month, dog groomer 300 to 500 CHF annually, vet 200 to 600 CHF without major treatments. In the first year, total costs of around 1,500 to 2,000 CHF should be expected.
What really matters when buying from a breeder?
You should avoid breeders who constantly have puppies available or offer several “rare” crossbreeds. Reputable Maltipoo breeders specialise in this single cross.
The mother dog must be shown alive on the premises, not just in photos. She should be relaxed and friendly, not fearful or aggressive. Ask about the father: Is he also on site or can you visit him?
Health tests are mandatory: PRA genetic tests, patella examination, heart ultrasound of the parent animals. Without this proof, you are buying a health risk.
A good breeder asks questions in return: living situation, experience with dogs, time budget. Anyone who only asks about payment wants to sell quickly.
Is a Maltipoo suitable for dog beginners?
To some extent. Training is not difficult, but the care effort is often underestimated. Beginners should be prepared to invest time and money in professional help.
How much exercise does a Maltipoo need?
Two to three walks daily, each lasting 20 to 30 minutes. Mental work is just as important as physical activity. Search games, small tricks or puzzle toys tire it out better than hours of walking.
Can Maltipoos be left alone?
For a maximum of four to five hours, and only after gradual training. Their affectionate nature makes them prone to separation anxiety. Working people need alternatives: dog sitters, kennels or the possibility to take the dog to work.
What size do Maltipoos reach?
25 to 35 cm height at the withers, 3 to 7 kg weight. The size depends on whether a Toy, Miniature or Small Poodle was used as a parent animal. There are no guarantees – even small parents can produce larger offspring.
Why do Maltipoos bark often?
Boredom, excitement or lack of training lead to excessive barking. In flats, this quickly becomes a neighbourhood problem. Early anti-barking training is therefore essential.
Are Maltipoos good family dogs?
With older children from around 8 years old, it usually works well. Toddlers can be too rough for a 5-kilo dog. The risk of injury goes both ways.
Do Maltipoos get along with other pets?
This depends on socialisation. It often works well with cats, but they may overestimate themselves around larger dogs. Their self-confidence does not always match their body size.
What happens if a Maltipoo receives too little care?
Mats pull on the skin and can lead to eczema. Uncut hair in front of the eyes impairs vision. Neglected teeth lead to tartar and bad breath.
Is there a difference between F1, F1b and F2 Maltipoos?
F1 = direct cross Maltese x Poodle (50/50). F1b = backcross with Poodle (25% Maltese, 75% Poodle). F2 = Maltipoo x Maltipoo. The coat structure becomes less predictable the further you move away from the original cross.
Can Maltipoos swim?
Theoretically yes, but in practice many are afraid of water. Their dense coat soaks up water and makes swimming strenuous. With positive habituation and shallow water, they can learn – but they do not have to.
When is a Maltipoo fully grown?
Physically at 12 to 15 months, mentally it takes longer. Some retain their playful puppy nature well into old age – which is charming, but can also become exhausting.
