Here, the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord are affected – they connect muscles, skin and limbs with the central nervous system. If this connection fails or is disturbed, movement problems, numbness and muscle weakness arise.

2. Polyneuropathy

In polyneuropathy, several nerves are affected simultaneously – often symmetrically in the limbs. The result: weakness, paralysis or motor disorders in the hind and forelimbs, which often affect both sides equally.

3. Sensory Neuropathy

Here it affects the sensory nerves that transmit sensations such as pain, temperature and touch. Affected dogs sometimes no longer react to stimuli at all – or conversely, much too violently. An altered perception of pain can lead to a dog injuring itself without noticing.

Causes of Neuropathy in Dogs

The spectrum of possible causes is broad – from genetic through metabolic to traumatic factors:

1. Genetic Causes

Some breeds carry an increased risk from birth. Hereditary Polyneuropathy occurs, for example, in Leonbergers, Golden Retrievers and Alaskan Malamutes. First signs often appear already in puppyhood, and the nerve function then deteriorates further step by step.

2. Metabolic Disorders

Diabetes mellitus is one of the most common causes – permanently elevated blood sugar attacks the nerves. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) can also trigger neuropathy, as it slows down the entire metabolism and thus also impairs nerve function.

3. Inflammatory Diseases

Autoimmune diseases such as Idiopathic Polyradiculoneuritis or the equivalent in dogs to Guillain-Barré Syndrome can attack the nerves. A typical feature is a rapid progression of weakness affecting the hind or forelimbs – sometimes within just a few days.

4. Toxic Causes

Poisoning by heavy metals such as lead or arsenic, as well as by pesticides, can directly damage the nerves. Such poisonings are often recognised only late because the symptoms develop insidiously.

5. Traumatic Causes

Direct injuries – for example from car accidents, falls or bites – can sever nerves, crush them or affect the spinal cord. The prognosis then depends heavily on how severely the nerve has actually been damaged.

6. Infections

Pathogens can also trigger neuropathy: Lyme borreliosis is a well-known example in which bacteria attack the nerves. The distemper virus can also leave neurological damage – sometimes even weeks after the acute illness.

Symptoms of Neuropathy in Dogs

What owners notice first varies greatly – depending on which nerves are affected and how advanced the damage is. The following often occur:

  • Weakness or paralysis of the limbs: The dog starts to stumble, can no longer use its legs purposefully or suddenly appears unsure when climbing stairs.
  • Numbness or altered sensation: Some dogs barely react to touch or pain stimuli anymore – others become seemingly inexplicably hypersensitive.
  • Muscle atrophy (muscle wasting): If nerves fail permanently, muscles no longer receive signals and break down. This is often clearly visible to the naked eye – one leg looks thinner than the other.
  • Unsteady or swaying gait: Dogs with neuropathy trip, place their paws uncoordinatedly or waddle noticeably.
  • Loss of reflexes: During the neurological examination, the dog hardly or not at all reacts to reflex tests – an important clue for the vet.
  • Chronic pain: Particularly if sensory nerves are affected, persistent pain can occur – recognisable, for example, by restlessness, changed behaviour or vocalisations without an apparent reason.

Diagnosis of Neuropathy in Dogs

A reliable diagnosis requires more than a quick glance – the vet must proceed systematically. Typical examination steps are:

  • Clinical examination: A thorough neurological examination checks nerve functions and reflexes – including gait, postural reactions and sensation tests at various body locations.
  • Blood tests: Blood tests provide clues to metabolic causes such as diabetes or thyroid problems.
  • Electromyography (EMG): This special procedure measures the electrical activity of the muscles and allows conclusions to be drawn about nerve function – particularly useful if other findings remain unclear.
  • Nerve biopsy: In rare cases, a small tissue sample is taken from a nerve to directly assess structure and damage patterns under the microscope.
  • Imaging techniques: X-rays, CT or MRI reveal structural causes – such as tumours, spinal injuries or slipped discs that press on nerves.

Treatment of Neuropathy in Dogs

What helps depends crucially on the cause. Sometimes nerve function can be largely restored by targeted treatment of the underlying disease. In other cases – especially with genetically determined or chronic forms – symptomatic therapy is at the centre.

1. Treatment of the Underlying Disease

If there is a metabolic disease, this must be stabilised first. Diabetic dogs need insulin therapy, in hypothyroidism thyroid hormones are given – and often an improvement in nerve symptoms is seen afterwards.

2. Anti-inflammatory Therapy

In autoimmune neuropathies, corticosteroids or other immunosuppressants are used. They dampen the misguided immune reaction and can noticeably reduce inflammation in the nerves.

3. Pain Therapy

Nerve pain is a category of its own – classic painkillers often fall short here. Medications such as Gabapentin or Pregabalin are specifically designed for neuropathic pain and can noticeably improve quality of life.

4. Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation

Movement is also important with neuropathy – but adapted. Hydrotherapy relieves the joints and simultaneously trains muscles that would otherwise atrophy. Massages and electrical stimulation can help stimulate nerve activity and slow down muscle breakdown.

5. Surgical Interventions

If the neuropathy is caused by mechanical pressure – such as a tumour or a slipped disc – sometimes an operation is the only sensible way to permanently relieve the nerves.

Prognosis

How a dog with neuropathy fares in the long term cannot be stated generally. If the cause is treatable and recognised early, many dogs recover at least partially. With hereditary or chronically progressing forms, the prognosis is more cautious – here care focuses mainly on pain management and maintaining quality of life.
