What is neosporosis?

Neospora caninum is a parasitic protozoan – i.e. a single-celled parasite – and a close relative of Toxoplasma gondii, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis. Cattle and dogs are among its preferred hosts. Dogs are affected in two ways: as the definitive host, the parasite multiplies in the intestine; as an intermediate host, it embeds itself in muscles and nerves. This is precisely what makes it so dangerous – the consequences range from muscle weakness to severe neurological deficits.

Causes and transmission routes

Neosporosis enters the dog via two main routes:

  1. Ingestion of infected tissue: If a dog eats raw meat or placental remnants from infected animals – particularly cattle as typical intermediate hosts – it can become infected with Neospora caninum.
  2. Transmission via the placenta (in utero): An infected female dog passes the parasites to her puppies placentally during pregnancy. This congenital infection particularly often leads to severe symptoms.

Symptoms of Neosporosis

How severely the disease manifests depends primarily on the age of the dog and the extent of the infection. Congenitally infected puppies usually show symptoms earlier and more intensely than adult dogs.

In puppies:

  • Paralysis: The most prominent sign is progressive paralysis of the hind legs. It begins in the hind limbs and can spread forward – up to the entire body.
  • Muscle stiffness and contractures: The musculature can harden, and permanent joint contractures develop – i.e. shortenings of muscles and tendons – which can permanently deform the legs.
  • Weakness and movement disorders: Affected puppies appear generally weak, have difficulty walking, and occasionally show twitching.
  • Neurological symptoms: In advanced cases, torticollis, tremors, seizures, or dysphagia may occur.

In adult dogs:

  • Insidious muscle weakness: Adult dogs often develop slowly increasing muscle weakness, sometimes accompanied by tremors or poor coordination.
  • Ataxia: Impaired movement coordination – briefly ataxia – is a typical picture in infected dogs.
  • Eye problems: In some cases, inflammation in the eye (uveitis) occurs or other visual impairments arise.
  • Breathing problems: If the parasite affects the respiratory muscles, breathing difficulties can arise.
  • Heart problems: Rare, but possible: if the pathogen affects the heart muscle, heart failure can occur.

Diagnosis of Neosporosis

Making a diagnosis is not always easy because the symptoms are non-specific and many other diseases look similar. Common examination methods include:

  1. Blood test: An antibody test determines whether the dog has formed specific antibodies against Neospora caninum. A positive result can indicate an active or also a previous infection.
  2. Tissue samples: Muscle or nerve biopsies enable the direct detection of the parasite in the affected tissue – especially in advanced cases, this is the most reliable method.
  3. Imaging: X-rays or MRI scans can make structural changes visible, such as joint contractures or nerve damage.

Treatment of Neosporosis

Treatment aims to kill the parasites and alleviate symptoms. Common treatments include:

  1. Antiparasitic medications: Clindamycin and Trimethoprim-sulfonamide are the most commonly used medications to combat Neospora caninum. These medications should be administered over a longer period to effectively combat the parasites.
  2. Anti-inflammatory medications: In severe cases, anti-inflammatory agents or corticosteroids can be administered to reduce the inflammation caused by the infection.
  3. Physiotherapy: Physiotherapy can help improve the mobility of the affected muscles and joints and prevent muscle loss.
  4. Care and support: In severe cases of paralysis or weakness, dogs may require intensive care, including support with feeding, care of affected skin areas, and aids to improve mobility.

Prognosis

How good the chances of recovery are depends heavily on how early the disease is detected:

  • Early diagnosis and treatment: If neosporosis is detected in good time and treated with antiparasitics, the chances are good – especially in adult dogs, many animals recover.
  • Severe courses in puppies: For puppies with existing paralysis or joint contractures, the prognosis is significantly worse. In such cases, the damage can be irreversible.

Prevention of Neosporosis

Because the consequences can be severe, consistent preventive action is worthwhile:

  1. No raw meat from livestock: Dogs should neither eat raw meat nor placental remnants from cattle or other livestock – this significantly reduces the risk of infection.
  2. Monitoring pregnant bitches: Pregnant bitches should be regularly examined by a vet to detect an infection with Neospora caninum early and prevent transmission to the puppies.
  3. Hygiene on the farm: Farmers and dog owners should ensure that dogs do not have access to birth residues from cattle – these can contain parasites.
