Bronchodilators are medications that dilate the bronchi (the airways in the lungs) and thus facilitate breathing. They relax the smooth muscle in the bronchi, thereby reducing narrowing of the airways. In dogs, they are frequently used when respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, or pneumonia impair breathing.

How do bronchodilators work?

In cases of respiratory problems, the smooth muscle of the bronchi spasms or narrows. Bronchodilators act on this muscle, relaxing it and thus increasing the air permeability of the airways. Based on their mechanism of action, two main types can be distinguished:

Beta-2 adrenoceptor agonists

They activate the beta-2 receptors in the bronchi, which leads to relaxation of the smooth muscle and dilation of the airways. Representatives include:

  • Salbutamol (Albuterol)
  • Terbutaline

Both act rapidly and are particularly effective in acute attacks of breathlessness.

Anticholinergics

They block the effect of acetylcholine on the smooth muscle of the bronchi and thus reduce narrowing of the airways. A typical example is:

  • Ipratropium bromide

Methylxanthines

Substances such as theophylline dilate the bronchi by promoting relaxation of the smooth muscle. Furthermore, they exert a mild anti-inflammatory effect and can improve the efficiency of the respiratory muscles.

When are bronchodilators used in dogs?

Bronchodilators may be considered for dogs whose respiratory disease causes narrowing of the bronchi and makes breathing difficult. Typical indications are:

  • Asthma: Dogs with allergic asthma or asthma-like conditions often experience episodes of breathlessness, during which the bronchi are severely narrowed. Bronchodilators can help facilitate breathing and alleviate acute attacks.
  • Chronic bronchitis: Chronic bronchitis is an inflammatory disease of the airways that can lead to narrowing of the bronchi. Bronchodilators help dilate the airways and alleviate symptoms.
  • Tracheal collapse: Dogs with a tracheal collapse (a collapsing of the windpipe) may be given bronchodilators to dilate the airways and facilitate breathing.
  • Allergic reactions: In acute allergic reactions that cause narrowing of the airways, bronchodilators can be used to stabilise breathing.
  • Pneumonia: In severe cases of pneumonia, narrowing of the bronchi may occur. Bronchodilators can help improve respiratory function.
  • Aspiration pneumonia: After accidentally inhaling foreign material (aspiration), aspiration pneumonia may develop. Bronchodilators can keep the airways open to alleviate symptoms.

Forms of administration of bronchodilators

Depending on the dog’s condition and the desired effect, various routes of administration are available:

  1. Tablets or capsules: Oral bronchodilators are administered in the form of tablets or capsules and exert a long-lasting effect over several hours. This form is suitable for dogs with chronic respiratory diseases.
  2. Injections: In emergencies or during acute attacks, the vet may administer an injection of bronchodilators to achieve a rapid effect.
  3. Inhalers: Inhaled bronchodilators enter the airways directly, act rapidly and are particularly helpful in acute attacks of breathlessness. In dogs, special inhalation chambers are used to administer the medication via an inhaler.

Side effects of bronchodilators in dogs

Like all medications, bronchodilators can also cause side effects. Which ones occur depends on the respective type of active ingredient:

Beta-2 agonists (e.g. salbutamol, terbutaline):

  • Trembling
  • Restlessness or hyperactivity
  • Palpitations (tachycardia)
  • High blood pressure

In rare cases, beta-2 agonists can also lead to heart rhythm disorders in the event of an overdose.

Methylxanthines (e.g. theophylline):

  • Increased heart rate
  • Restlessness or nervousness
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea

In rare cases, seizures may occur, particularly in the event of an overdose.

Anticholinergics (e.g. ipratropium):

  • Dry mouth
  • Dry eyes
  • Confusion or disorientation

With prolonged use, constipation or problems with urination may occur.

The dose and the dog’s response to the medication should be monitored closely. In the event of side effects, a vet should be consulted immediately.

Precautions and contraindications

In dogs with certain pre-existing conditions, caution is advised when using bronchodilators:

  1. Heart disease: As some bronchodilators can increase heart rate, they should only be used in dogs with heart problems under strict veterinary supervision.
  2. High blood pressure: Dogs with high blood pressure should only receive bronchodilators in consultation with a vet, as these can further increase blood pressure.
  3. Kidney disease: In dogs with impaired kidney function, methylxanthines should be dosed cautiously, as they are excreted via the kidneys and can cause a burden.

Prognosis and long-term use

In dogs with chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma or bronchitis, bronchodilators can significantly improve quality of life by easing breathing and preventing shortness of breath. In many cases, long-term treatment is required, which a vet must carefully monitor.

In acute situations, bronchodilators can provide rapid relief and be life-saving in severe attacks of shortness of breath or allergic reactions.

Bronchodilators are a central remedy for respiratory diseases in dogs. They widen the airways and ease breathing, in asthma, bronchitis and tracheal collapse as well as in acute emergencies. Application should be left to veterinary professionals: Only expert dosing and monitoring minimises side effects and ensures treatment success.
