Content
Bravecto contains the active ingredient fluralaner and belongs to the group of isoxazolines. It works systemically against fleas and ticks, for up to 12 weeks depending on the preparation.
In Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, Bravecto is prescription-only. Bravecto may only be dispensed on a veterinary prescription, and using it without an examination is medically irresponsible. In Germany, owners may only obtain prescription-only veterinary medicines from a pharmacy or the treating vet (§ 49(7) TAMG).
Why Bravecto must not be used on your own initiative
Mechanism of action with systemic effect
Fluralaner interferes with the nervous system of parasites. The active ingredient circulates in the dog’s blood. An individual veterinary assessment is therefore required:
- Age of the dog
- Body weight
- Pre-existing neurological conditions
- Existing medication
- Liver and kidney status
Isoxazolines are under observation due to possible neurological side effects (e.g. tremor, seizures in predisposed animals). These are rare but documented.
Exact dosing is required
Bravecto is dosed according to weight. Underdosing reduces efficacy and promotes resistance development in parasites. Overdosing increases the risk of adverse effects. Problems often arise from incorrect weight estimation or splitting tablets when the product information does not allow for it.
Alternatives depending on individual risk
Not every dog needs long-term systemic protection. Available alternatives:
- Spot-on preparations
- Collars
- Mechanical tick control
- Management via habitat and season
Whether a long-term preparation is sensible depends on individual risk: region of residence, travel behaviour, hunting use, immune status. A city dog in Zurich has a different exposure risk than a hunting dog in the Black Forest or a holiday dog in southern France.
Legal situation in CH / DE / AT
Bravecto is subject to the respective veterinary medicinal law:
- Switzerland: Therapeutic Products Act (HMG)
- Germany: Veterinary Medicines Act (TAMG) in conjunction with Regulation (EU) 2019/6
- Austria: Veterinary medicinal law
Obtaining it via unofficial online sources carries a real risk of counterfeits or improper storage.
Regular procurement
- Veterinary consultation: Risk analysis, weight control, clarification of pre-existing conditions.
- Prescription or direct dispensing at the practice
- Procurement via licensed pharmacies or vet
For long-term use, regular review of the necessity is advisable.
What should be avoided
- Purchase via marketplaces or foreign shops without prescription verification
- Using leftover supplies from other dogs
- Adjusting dosages independently
- Combination with other antiparasitics without consultation
