Genetic foundations of the human-dog relationship

Domestication began 15,000 to 40,000 years ago. Since then, dogs have genetically adapted to living with us — not only externally but also internally. A Japanese study examined which genetic factors shape this close bond. The researchers found that certain mutations are directly linked to increased social trust towards humans.

At the centre is the oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) — known from human bonding research, and therefore relevant on both sides of the leash. Dogs with certain variants of this gene seek eye contact more frequently and react more alertly to human signals. This provides an explanation for why cooperation between humans and dogs works so smoothly.

The researchers used EEG measurements (electroencephalography) to compare brain waves of dogs and their owners in various situations. The strongest synchronisation occurred when the human was attentive and emotionally present. The closer the emotional bond, the more pronounced the coupling. Dogs with a particularly intense relationship with their key person showed significantly stronger synchronisation effects than those with looser contact.
