The flank is the area between the last rib cage and the hip bone on the side of the dog. This region tells you more about your dog’s health than any other part of the body, provided you know what to look for.

Why the flank is so informative

Unlike the rest of the torso, the flank does not lie over massive bones. You can feel the abdominal muscles directly here and detect changes in the abdominal cavity. In healthy dogs, the flank is slightly tucked in, forming a gentle curve from the ribs to the hip.

How to palpate the flank correctly

Place your flat hand on the side of the abdomen, about a hand’s breadth behind the last rib. Apply light pressure; you should be able to feel the abdominal wall without the dog showing signs of pain. A healthy flank feels soft and yielding.

The flank rises and falls rhythmically with breathing. After exertion, this movement becomes more pronounced, which is normal.

When the Flank Indicates Problems

A distended flank may indicate gastric dilation, an emergency requiring immediate treatment. The flank then feels hard and tense, like a drum.

Sunken flanks in dogs of normal weight can mean dehydration. To check this, lift a fold of skin on the flank: in healthy dogs, it snaps back immediately.

Asymmetry between the left and right flank points to one-sided problems, such as organ enlargement or local inflammation.

What Vets Detect Through Flank Palpation

The kidneys lie directly beneath the rear flank region and can be felt in larger dogs. Enlarged or painful kidneys become apparent here.

Fluid accumulation in the abdominal cavity (ascites) shows as a wave-like movement during palpation. The vet can determine whether fluid is sloshing in the abdomen by applying targeted pressure.
