Electrolytes are electrically charged minerals that regulate fluid balance, nerve conduction and muscle function in dogs.

An electrolyte imbalance can occur after severe diarrhoea, vomiting or intense physical exertion in heat. The minerals sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium and magnesium are central to bodily functions such as heartbeat, muscle contraction and nerve impulses.

Why does my dog need electrolytes?

Electrolytes regulate water distribution in the body. Sodium and chloride determine whether fluid remains in the cells or moves into the blood.

Nerve conduction works via electrical impulses transmitted by potassium and sodium. Without these minerals, communication between brain and muscles breaks down.

Calcium and magnesium trigger muscle contractions and then relax them again. In the heart muscle, an imbalance can become life-threatening.

The pH level in the blood is kept stable by bicarbonate. If the blood becomes too acidic or too alkaline, organs and metabolic processes fail.

What triggers an electrolyte imbalance?

Diarrhoea and vomiting flush massive amounts of sodium, potassium and chloride out of the body. A dog loses as much potassium per day during severe diarrhoea as it normally would in a week.

Kidney diseases disrupt the balance. The kidneys then excrete either too much or too little of certain electrolytes.

Lack of water concentrates the remaining electrolytes. Older dogs that drink less, or dogs in heat without sufficient shade, are at risk.

Diuretics excrete sodium and potassium via urine. This is intended for heart problems, but becomes dangerous with incorrect dosage.

Addison’s disease destroys the adrenal gland’s hormone production. Without these hormones, electrolyte balance is disrupted, usually with life-threateningly low sodium.

How do I recognise an electrolyte imbalance?

The dog appears weak and moves less than usual. Some dogs show muscle tremors or uncoordinated movements.

Breathing can become shallow or laboured. In severe imbalance, dogs collapse or develop arrhythmias.

Increased drinking and urination often point to kidney problems as the cause. Vomiting and diarrhoea exacerbate the problem.

In severe cases, shock develops; the dog is barely responsive, and mucous membranes become pale.

How does the vet make the diagnosis?

A blood test shows the concentration of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate.

Further tests clarify the cause: kidney values, hormone levels or urine analyses. If Addison’s disease is suspected, the vet measures adrenal hormones.

How is an electrolyte imbalance treated?

In severe imbalance, the dog receives an infusion immediately. The solution contains exactly the electrolytes that are missing or present in excess.

Milder cases can be treated with oral electrolyte solutions, but only if the dog is not vomiting.

The underlying condition must be addressed in parallel. Addison’s disease requires lifelong hormone replacement; kidney problems require an adapted diet.

Medications such as diuretics are adjusted in dosage or temporarily discontinued.

Can I prevent an electrolyte imbalance?

Constant access to fresh water is essential. In heat or after exercise, the dog needs more fluid.

Regular blood checks in older dogs or those with chronic conditions reveal problems early.

A balanced nutrition with all necessary minerals supports natural balance. Cheap food with inferior ingredients can lead to deficiencies.

Underlying conditions should be treated consistently. Kidney or hormonal problems worsen without therapy and destabilise electrolyte balance.
