An analgesic is a medication for pain relief – it dulls pain, reduces it or eliminates it completely. Vets use analgesics in dogs as soon as acute or chronic pain burdens the animal: after injuries, around surgeries, with inflammatory conditions such as arthritis or with other diseases that noticeably erode quality of life. In short: In veterinary medicine, they are among the most important tools to help a dog feel comfortable again.

When is an analgesic used in dogs?

The areas of application are broader than many owners assume. Here are the most common situations:

  1. Post-operative pain: After procedures such as neutering, joint surgeries or tumour removal, dogs almost always receive pain medication – it helps control recovery pain and does not interfere with the healing process.
  2. Acute injuries: Fractures, sprains, deep wounds – in such cases, analgesics should rapidly reduce immediate pain so that the dog can settle down.
  3. Chronic pain: Dogs with arthritis, hip dysplasia or disc herniations often require long-term pain therapy – not only to dull pain, but also to maintain mobility and quality of daily life.
  4. Cancer: Tumour pain can be very severe. Analgesics make it possible to maintain the quality of life for dogs with cancer until the end.
  5. Dental problems: A tooth abscess, a necessary extraction or severe gingivitis hurts – even in dogs. Analgesics relieve this pain and make daily life more bearable.

Types of analgesics in dogs

Veterinary medicine has several classes of active ingredients in its repertoire. Which one is used is decided by the vet depending on the type of pain, severity and general condition of the animal.

Nichtsteroidale Antirheumatika (NSAR):

  • NSAIDs are among the most frequently prescribed painkillers for dogs. They block the formation of prostaglandins – endogenous messenger substances that drive inflammation and intensify pain.
  • Common active ingredients in dogs: carprofen (Rimadyl®), meloxicam (Metacam®), deracoxib (Deramaxx®), firocoxib (Previcox®).
  • NSAIDs have proven particularly effective for arthritis and other inflammation-related pain.

Opioide:

  • Opioids are the heavier artillery – they are used for severe pain after surgery or in advanced diseases such as cancer. Their mechanism: They bind to receptors in the brain and spinal cord, thereby partially switching off pain perception.
  • Typical representatives in dogs: buprenorphine, fentanyl, tramadol.
  • Opioids are primarily intended for short-term use – with longer administration, side effects may increase.

Adjuvante Analgetika:

  • This group does not act primarily as painkillers, but can significantly improve pain therapy in combination with other analgesics – especially for nerve pain or when individual active ingredients alone are insufficient.
  • Well-known examples: gabapentin (nerve pain), amantadine (enhances the effect of NSAIDs, helpful for chronic pain).

Lokalanästhetika:

  • Local anaesthetics selectively switch off nerve conduction in a defined body area. They are the treatment of choice for surgeries or minor surgical procedures when only a specific site needs to be numbed.
  • Typical: lidocaine, bupivacaine.

Kortikosteroide:

  • Strictly speaking, corticosteroids are not classic painkillers – but prednisone or dexamethasone can relieve pain based on severe inflammation, such as in allergies or autoimmune diseases. Their anti-inflammatory effect makes the difference.

How do analgesics work in dogs?

The mechanism of action depends heavily on the class of active ingredient. Fundamentally, analgesics attack at two points: They either interrupt the transmission of pain signals in the nervous system or they curb the inflammatory response that ignites the pain in the first place.

NSAIDs inhibit the enzyme that produces prostaglandins – and thus also pain and swelling. Opioids bind directly to receptors in the brain and spinal cord, thereby dampening how strongly a pain signal is perceived. Analgesics can act systemically – i.e., affecting the whole body – or locally, i.e., targeted at the affected site. This makes them a versatile tool against tissue damage, inflammation, and nerve pain alike.

Possible side effects of analgesics in dogs

Analgesics help – but they are not harmless vitamin supplements. Depending on the active ingredient, different side effects may occur. Therefore, the vet should keep the dog under regular observation during ongoing pain treatment so that problems can be detected early.

Nebenwirkungen von NSAR:

  • Gastrointestinal problems: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea – in severe cases also stomach ulcers.
  • Kidney problems: NSAIDs can impair kidney function, especially in dogs with pre-existing kidney issues or if the dog does not drink enough.
  • Liver problems: Rare, but possible: In individual cases, NSAIDs can stress the liver.

Nebenwirkungen von Opioiden:

  • Sedation: Opioids often make dogs sleepy – this is generally known, but should be considered when dosing.
  • Constipation: Opioids slow down bowel activity, which can lead to stubborn constipation.
  • Respiratory depression: High doses can dangerously lower the breathing rate – a reason why these medications must only be administered under veterinary supervision.

Nebenwirkungen von Gabapentin und anderen adjuvanten Analgetika:

  • Sedation: Drowsiness and sleepiness are not uncommon with gabapentin, especially at the start of therapy.
  • Dizziness or ataxia: Some dogs appear wobbly or have coordination problems – owners often notice this as “weird walking”.

Allergische Reaktionen: In seltenen Fällen reagieren Hunde allergisch auf Schmerzmittel. Warnzeichen sind Juckreiz, Hautausschläge oder Schwellungen – bei diesen Anzeichen sofort den Tierarzt kontaktieren.

Important notes on the use of analgesics

  1. No self-medication: Never give human painkillers such as ibuprofen, paracetamol or aspirin to dogs – these substances are toxic to dogs and can be fatal in the worst case. What helps humans harms the dog.
  2. Regular monitoring: Regular vet visits are part of long-term pain therapy. Blood tests show whether the dog’s liver and kidneys are still within safe limits.
  3. Dose adjustment: The dose recommended by the vet applies – full stop. An unauthorised increase can trigger serious side effects, even if you think you want to help the dog faster.
  4. Pain control: Pain in dogs should not be put off. Uncontrolled pain stresses the animal, suppresses appetite and demonstrably delays healing.

Analgesics in practice

Analgesics are indispensable in modern pain therapy for dogs. Depending on what causes the pain and how severe it is, the vet selects the appropriate class of active ingredient – or combines several. Administration always takes place under veterinary supervision: This allows precise dose adjustment and keeps the risk of side effects as low as possible. Anyone who observes their dog well and takes behavioural changes seriously provides the vet with valuable clues – and gives the dog the best chance of effective pain treatment.
