Why did Kommissar Rex fascinate so many dog owners?

If you sat in front of the TV on Sunday evenings in the nineties, you could hardly miss Rex. A German Shepherd who catches criminals, communicates with looks and acts as if it were all the most normal thing in the world – that triggered something. In many viewers, the desire: I’d like to have a dog like that too.

The Austrian crime series ran from 1994 to 2004 and attracted up to 7 million viewers per episode. But Rex was more than entertainment. He showed a broad audience what German Shepherds are capable of – if you give them the chance to become so.

How were the Rex dogs trained for the film set?

Behind Rex was not a single dog, but over the years a total of six different German Shepherds. The training was in the hands of Teresa A. Miller, a Hollywood trainer who had already worked on film productions with her riding school „Animal Farm”. Her principle was consistent: exclusively positive reinforcement, no pressure, no coercion.

The dogs were carefully deployed according to their strengths. Santo, the first Rex, mastered over 50 commands. Rhett excelled in chase scenes, while Alex and Henry were later mainly used for calmer close-ups. Each had its profile.

What the dogs learned was not simple stunt choreography. They had to build behaviour chains: pick up a scent trail, retrieve objects, respond to acoustic signals – and do all this relaxed in front of running cameras. Anyone who has observed that understands why German Shepherd owners reacted with such enthusiasm.

Which training methods from the series also work at home?

There were three basic principles that the Rex team worked by – and these can be directly transferred to everyday life with your own dog:

Short, intensive sessions: A maximum of 15 minutes at a time, but several times throughout the day. The Rex dogs never completed hour-long training blocks. In long sessions, even a highly motivated German Shepherd loses concentration – that is not a weakness, that is biology.

Reward at the right moment: Treats came within seconds of the desired behaviour. Not sometime later, not after a praise sentence. This temporal precision separates good training from ineffective training.

Build behaviour in small steps: The famous scent trail scenes consisted of around 20 individual steps. Step 2 only came when step 1 was really solid. This patient approach is the core – and at the same time what most beginners fail at.

What can German Shepherd owners learn from Rex?

Rex made visible something that many German Shepherd owners know from everyday life: this breed wants to work. Willingness to work, quick comprehension, the urge to be needed – that is not a cliché, but everyday life with a well-handled German Shepherd.

But that is exactly where the crux lies. A German Shepherd without a task will find one – and that rarely ends well. Rex always had a job. Household German Shepherds need the same: search games, obedience training, dog sports. Anyone who underestimates this will eventually struggle with chewed furniture or a dog that escalates at every doorbell ring.

The series also showed how sensitively German Shepherds react to people. Rex read the mood of his film partners and adapted – that is not fiction, that is a real characteristic of the breed. No wonder that German Shepherds today belong to the most frequently used therapy and assistance dogs.

How was animal welfare ensured on the Rex set?

From the beginning, animal welfare organisations were involved in the production. Shooting days were limited to a maximum of four hours, with real breaks between scenes – not just short interruptions. As soon as a dog showed stress signals, filming stopped. No discussion.

Clever was also the parallel strategy: While one dog was in front of the camera, the others rested. No Rex actor filmed more than three days a week. That sounds obvious, but at the time it was anything but standard in the film industry.

And the sausage roll scenes? They needed no trick. The dogs actually loved that food – which naturally made training easier. Using natural behaviour instead of forcing it: that was Miller’s philosophy, consistently maintained.

Are German Shepherds suitable for beginners?

No – and Rex is a bad example if you want to answer this question honestly. The dogs in the series had years of professional training behind them. A German Shepherd puppy needs at least two years of consistent training before it reacts reliably even approximately. Anyone who underestimates that does neither themselves nor the dog any favours.

Can all German Shepherds be trained as well as Rex?

The foundations are present in most dogs – but talent is not evenly distributed. The Rex actors were specifically selected for their willingness to work and stress resistance. However, with patience and the right method, any German Shepherd can achieve remarkable feats. The potential is there; it needs to be tapped.

Which Rex commands can I teach my German Shepherd?

„Search” for nose work, „Bring” for fetching and „Guard” for object protection work well with most German Shepherds. Tracking, as seen in the series, is genuine specialist training – there is no way around professional instruction.

How much exercise does a German Shepherd like Rex need?

At least two hours daily, including half an hour of genuine training. The Rex dogs were often in motion for five to six hours on set – although with plenty of rest breaks in between. And: mere walks are not enough. The mind must be engaged too, otherwise the energy remains where it does not belong.

Did the Rex dogs live normally after the series?

Yes, all actors were rehomed to their trainers or familiar families after filming wrapped. Santo, the first Rex, lived with his trainer in Austria until he was 14 – and apparently enjoyed retirement to the fullest.
