5 excursion tips for dog beaches away from the coast

Not everyone lives by the coast – and honestly, not everyone wants to spend their summer holiday with a dog among thousands of beachgoers on the North or Baltic Sea. Fortunately, you do not need to go to the sea for that. There are also places in inland areas where water, sand and proper exercise come together. We present five dog beaches in Bavaria, Hamburg, Lower Saxony and Rhineland-Palatinate – for day trips, weekend getaways or simply for spontaneous cooling off on a hot afternoon.

Why dog beaches inland are often underestimated

Dog beaches away from the coast are frequently less crowded, closer by and surprisingly diverse in terms of landscape – from quiet lakes in Bavaria to urban water edges right in the middle of Hamburg.

What dogs need is actually simple: water, space and movement. If the place is also quiet and the animals are allowed to move freely, the excursion makes sense for both human and dog equally. That sounds like little – and yet you find such combinations less often than you think.

Dog beach Silbersee in Niedernberg (Bavaria)

The Silbersee near Niedernberg is a natural gravel pit lake with remarkably clear water. On the southern bank there is a separated dog area, accessible via a small footpath. The shallow shore makes it particularly suitable for dogs that do not yet like to go deep into the water – or that have simply never seen a wave before.

The atmosphere is relaxed, the sand fine, the area quiet. The area is not fenced in, but is easy to oversee due to its secluded location. Leash requirements apply on the access paths; on the beach itself, dogs are allowed to run and play freely – provided they come when called.

🦴 Tip: Pack a water bowl, towel and parasol – natural shade is rare in immediate proximity to the beach.

Dog beach Absberg (Bavaria)

At the bathing peninsula of Absberg on the Kleine Brombachsee in the Franconian Lake District, there is a dog-friendly section with a shallow shore, clean water and – which is actually unusual – a small agility course for playing together.

The ground consists of fine gravel, which feels pleasant for paws and apparently also invites digging. Around the dog beach there is plenty of space for picnic blankets, seating areas and walks into the greenery.

The designated area is not fenced in, but clearly marked and easy to see. Within it, dogs are allowed to run freely and enter the water – outside of it, leash requirements apply. A kiosk, toilets and parking spaces are nearby. The site is maintained by the Zweckverband Brombachsee (Brombachsee Association) and regularly cared for.

Dog run Lohmühlenpark in Hamburg

There is no beach feeling here – let that be said straight away. What the Lohmühlenpark offers instead: a well-maintained area with water access, centrally located in St. Georg, and right in the middle of a large city where space for dogs is generally scarce.

It is a designated dog area with access to water, not a sandy bay. It is not sufficient for extensive swimming – but anyone living in the city who wants to treat their dog to a spontaneous refreshment is in the right place. Old trees provide plenty of shade, and the paths are well-maintained.

Dog beach Silbersee in Langenhagen (Lower Saxony)

📍 Silberseeweg, 30855 Langenhagen

Just a few kilometres north of Hannover lies the Silbersee – a popular bathing lake with a specially designated dog area in the western part, at the end of Silberseeweg. The area is partially fenced, covers approx. 800 m² and offers some benches. Dogs can splash around in the shallow water here, roll in the sand or romp with other dogs.

During the official bathing season from 15 May to 15 September, dogs are only allowed off-leash in the designated dog area – a leash requirement applies in the rest of the shoreline area.

The infrastructure is solid: opposite the dog beach there is a small kiosk, sanitary facilities, a DLRG station and a mini-golf course. Parking spaces are available within walking distance.

Dog beach Oppenheim on the Rhine (Rhineland-Palatinate)

For the Mainz and Wiesbaden area, the dog beach on the Rhine in Oppenheim is something of a quiet hidden gem. Located directly on the Rhine, it offers a shoreline zone of sand and meadow, where dogs can play and go into the water.

The setting is quite something: cargo ships pass by on the opposite bank, and in the background historical Oppenheim stretches out with its vineyards. The entry to the water is shallow – but due to the current you should only let confident swimmers into the water.

🚩 Important: Official signage is missing in places. Before visiting, it is worth checking whether the area is currently approved as a dog beach. In practice, it is generally tolerated if you behave considerately.

Conclusion: Five dog beaches that make you miss the sea not at all

True – they are smaller than Sylt, more simply equipped and shaped by local character. But that is exactly what often makes these inland dog beaches more pleasant: less hustle and bustle, shorter journeys, more space to try things out.
