The soft palate (medically: velum palatinum) is a movable tissue part in the throat area of the dog. It separates the nasal cavity from the pharynx during swallowing and is responsible for breathing, the swallowing process and vocalisation. Changes or malformations of the soft palate can severely impair the health and quality of life of a dog.

Structure and Function

The soft palate consists of muscles, connective tissue and mucous membrane. It has several central functions:

  • Closure during swallowing: Prevents food or liquid from entering the nose.
  • Support of breathing: Regulates airflow between the nasal and pharyngeal cavities.
  • Sound production: Influences the dog’s voice and sounds.

Typical Problems with the Soft Palate

Especially in dogs with brachycephalic syndrome (short-headed breeds such as Pug, French Bulldog, Shih Tzu), a elongated soft palate frequently occurs:

  • Elongated soft palate: The tissue extends too far into the pharynx and obstructs breathing.
  • Symptoms: Snoring, snorting, shortness of breath, gagging, coughing, poor performance.
  • Consequences: Increased risk of shortness of breath in heat, excitement or exertion; life-threatening in severe cases.

Diagnosis

A pathologically altered soft palate is determined by a veterinary examination, usually in combination with:

  • Clinical examination of the mouth and pharynx
  • Anaesthetic examination for accurate assessment
  • Imaging procedures (endoscopy, X-rays) if there is suspicion of further respiratory problems

Treatment

Depending on the severity, there are various approaches:

  • Conservative: Weight reduction, avoidance of heat and overexertion, management of respiratory infections.
  • Surgical: Shortening of the soft palate (staphyloplasty) to clear the airways. Usually performed minimally invasively using a laser or electrosurgery.

Prevention and Responsibility

Since the elongated soft palate is strongly linked to the breeding of brachycephalic breeds, responsible breeding plays a decisive role. Reputable breeders pay attention to healthy anatomy and avoid extreme head shapes that predispose to breathing problems.
