Platelet aggregation – that sounds like technical jargon from the lab at first. But it simply describes what happens when your dog bleeds: platelets rush to the wound, stick together and plug the leak. The body’s own emergency service, so to speak.

Imagine your dog steps on a sharp piece of slate during a walk in the woods. Within seconds, tiny cells – the platelets – stream to the injury. They attach to each other, form a plug, and blood loss stops. What looks like a minor thing from the outside is a precisely timed process on the inside.

How does blood clotting work in dogs?

Injured blood vessel walls send out alarm signals. Platelets receive these, become activated, change shape and become sticky. They adhere to the wound site – and then attract more platelets. Layer by layer. The plug grows.

At the same time, the body produces fibrin: a thread-like protein that runs through the entire structure like a scaffold and stabilises it. In a healthy dog, a small cut stops bleeding within minutes. Larger injuries take longer – that is normal.

How can you recognise clotting disorders?

If your dog bleeds unusually long or heavily after a minor incident, it is worth taking a closer look. This may indicate impaired platelet aggregation – but not necessarily.

Possible signs of clotting disorders:

  • Nosebleeds without an apparent cause
  • Bruising after minor bumps
  • Prolonged bleeding after nail trimming
  • Blood in urine or faeces
  • Gum bleeding

Some breeds are more susceptible than others. Dobermans, for example, suffer from von Willebrand disease – a hereditary clotting disorder – at an above-average rate. It also occurs more frequently in German Shepherds and Rottweilers.

What impairs platelet function?

Aspirin, for example. This painkiller, which is readily available in the human household, significantly inhibits platelet activity in dogs. Therefore, the rule is: no medication from your own medicine cabinet without consulting the vet first.

Autoimmune diseases can attack the body’s own platelets – the body breaks them down faster than it produces new ones. Cancer or severe infections can also reduce platelet counts.

The other extreme is just as tricky: excessive clotting leads to blood clots forming in otherwise healthy vessels. Cushing’s syndrome or certain tumours can predispose the dog to this condition.

How does the vet make the diagnosis?

A blood count provides the platelet number. The normal range for dogs is 200,000 to 500,000 platelets per microlitre of blood. Deviations upwards or downwards are an initial indication – but not yet a diagnosis.

Special functional tests show whether the platelets are working correctly. The vet can measure bleeding time or order aggregation tests. If von Willebrand disease is suspected, the corresponding clotting factor is determined directly in the blood.

What does this mean for treatment?

Treatment depends on the cause – there is no one-size-fits-all solution. For von Willebrand disease, certain medications or plasma transfusions before surgery can make a difference.

Autoimmune thrombocytopenia is usually treated with cortisone or other immunosuppressants. In acute emergencies, a blood transfusion may be necessary. For excessive clotting, blood thinners are used – but these require close veterinary monitoring.

For owners of affected dogs, this means concretely: reduce the risk of injury in everyday life, inform the vet about the known clotting disorder before any procedure, and do not postpone regular blood checks. It sounds like a lot of effort – but it is easy to manage if you know what to look out for.
