Plasticisers are chemical substances added to plastics to make them flexible and malleable.
For dog owners, phthalates are particularly relevant, a group of plasticisers that can leach from plastic toys, food bowls or collars. The German Environment Agency classifies some phthalates as harmful to reproduction, while others are suspected of influencing the hormone system.
Which products contain plasticisers?
You will find phthalates mainly in soft PVC products:
- Chew toys made of soft plastic
- Colourful squeaky toys
- Flexible food bowls
- Soft collars and leads
- Dog beds with PVC covers
The process is called migration: plasticisers are not firmly bound in the plastic and continuously migrate to the surface. This process is accelerated by heat, saliva or mechanical stress.
How do plasticisers enter the dog’s body?
Dogs absorb phthalates mainly through three routes:
Direct chewing: When chewing intensively on soft plastic toys, measurable amounts of plasticisers are released. A study by Stiftung Warentest found phthalate concentrations in dog toys of up to 40 per cent of the material weight.
Food and water intake: Small amounts can continuously pass from plastic bowls into the food. It becomes particularly critical with fatty foods or if the bowl is left in the sun.
Skin absorption: Phthalates can be absorbed in small amounts through direct skin contact with soft plastic products.
What health risks exist for dogs?
The data on phthalates in dogs is limited. Insights come mainly from human studies and experiments with laboratory rats:
Hormonal effects: Phthalates can act like oestrogen or inhibit testosterone production. In laboratory animals, high doses led to changes in the sex organs.
Liver metabolism: Some phthalates are converted into metabolites in the liver, which can impair organ function under chronic exposure.
Developmental disorders: Animal experiments showed developmental abnormalities in the offspring of pregnant rats after phthalate exposure.
How can you recognise a possible exposure?
There are no specific symptoms of phthalate poisoning. Suspicious are non-specific signs in dogs that use a lot of plastic toys:
- Gastrointestinal complaints with no apparent cause
- Skin irritation or itching
- Behavioural changes
- Airway irritation
A vet cannot carry out direct phthalate tests. Diagnosis is made via the process of elimination and the medical history regarding products used.
How do you protect your dog from plasticisers?
Change of material: Replace soft plastic toys with natural rubber, untreated wood or rope. Stainless steel or ceramic bowls do not release chemicals.
Pay attention to product labelling: “Phthalate-free” or “PVC-free” are reliable indicators. CE marking alone is not sufficient; it only states that EU limit values are met.
Smell test: Plastic products with a strong chemical smell often contain high concentrations of plasticisers.
Toy rotation: Do not let your dog chew exclusively on one plastic toy. Switch between different materials.
Are there limit values for dog products?
In the EU, strict phthalate limit values apply to children’s toys. Dog toys do not fall under this regulation; only general chemical safety regulations apply here.
This means: manufacturers can legally use higher phthalate concentrations than are permitted in children’s products. In my assessment, this is a regulatory failure, as dogs chew on toys more intensively and for longer periods than toddlers.
