Overshot Bite

An overshot bite in dogs occurs when the upper incisors protrude significantly beyond the lower ones and the natural scissor bite is disrupted.

In a healthy dog’s bite, the upper incisors overlap the lower ones slightly – like a pair of scissors. If the upper jaw protrudes more than 2–3 millimetres beyond the lower jaw, vets speak of an overshot bite or superior prognathism.

Which dogs develop an overshot bite?

Certain breeds carry this dental misalignment genetically. Collies, Dachshunds and German Shepherds show an overshot bite more frequently than average. In brachycephalic breeds such as Pugs or French Bulldogs, the opposite is usually observed – an undershot bite.

In addition to genetic predisposition, growth disorders in the first few months of life can cause an overshot bite. Injuries during puppyhood that impair jaw growth sometimes lead to permanent misalignments.

How do you recognise a problematic overshot bite?

A slight overshot bite often causes no discomfort. It becomes problematic if the dog shows difficulty picking up food or chews visibly with effort.

In severe cases of overshot bite, the lower incisors can press against the palate and cause injuries there. You will then see red pressure marks or small wounds on your dog’s palate. Some dogs also develop tartar more quickly because natural cleaning through chewing does not function optimally.

What treatment is an option?

In puppies under six months, orthodontic correction can still be successful. Special braces for dogs cost between €1,500 and €3,000 and must be worn for several months.

In severe cases, surgical intervention is necessary. The vet then shortens the teeth that are too long or corrects the jaw alignment surgically. Such procedures should only be carried out by experienced veterinary dentists.

In mild cases, enhanced dental care is often sufficient. Daily tooth brushing and special chew items help prevent tartar formation and keep the gums healthy.
