Vasopressin
Vasopressin (also known as antidiuretic hormone, ADH) is a hormone produced in the hypothalamus that regulates water balance and blood pressure in the dog's body.

Vasopressin – often also referred to as antidiuretic hormone (ADH) – is a hormone that regulates two fairly fundamental things in the dog’s body: water balance and blood pressure. It is produced in the hypothalamus, a small but extremely busy area deep in the brain. From there, it migrates to the posterior pituitary lobe, where it waits for deployment – and is released into the blood if needed. Its most important target sites are the kidneys and the blood vessels: vasopressin retains water in the body and constricts the vessels to support blood pressure.
What Vasopressin Does in the Body
Broadly speaking, vasopressin has two core tasks – which complement each other well in everyday life:
- Regulation of water balance: Vasopressin acts directly on the kidneys, more precisely on the collecting ducts. There, it ensures that water is reabsorbed from the forming urine back into the blood. The result: the dog produces less urine and loses less fluid – particularly important if it is dehydrated or has not drunk enough.
- Regulation of blood pressure: At the same time, vasopressin acts vasoconstrictively, i.e. it constricts the blood vessels. This drives up blood pressure – a mechanism that can become vital especially in cases of blood loss or severe dehydration.
How and Why Vasopressin Is Released
Vasopressin is produced in the hypothalamus and then stored in the posterior pituitary lobe. Its release into the blood does not happen just like that, but as a reaction to concrete warning signals:
- Increased osmotic pressure in the blood – the blood is too concentrated, for example due to dehydration or a high salt concentration.
- Falling blood pressure, for example in cases of blood loss or shock.
- Low blood volume (hypovolaemia) – the body reacts to this by trying to save water and counteracting it.
When Vasopressin Goes Out of Balance – Diseases in Dogs
If vasopressin production or release does not work properly, diseases can arise that affect water balance and blood pressure sensitively.
Diabetes insipidus
Diabetes insipidus is rare, but striking: either the body produces too little vasopressin (central diabetes insipidus), or the kidneys simply no longer respond to it (nephrogenic diabetes insipidus). In both cases, the dog cannot retain water in the kidneys. The consequence: extreme thirst (polydipsia) and constant urination (polyuria) – a combination that owners notice quickly.
Symptoms: Affected dogs drink noticeably more, excrete large amounts of urine and often show weakness as well as signs of dehydration.
Treatment: For central diabetes insipidus, desmopressin has proven effective – a synthetic vasopressin analogue that takes over the function of the missing hormone.
Shock and Circulatory Collapse
In hypovolaemic shock or septic shock, when blood pressure drops dramatically, vasopressin can be used as an emergency medication. It constricts the blood vessels and thus stabilises blood pressure – a valuable tool in critical moments.
Syndrome of Inappropriate ADH Secretion (SIADH)
In SIADH, it goes the other way round: too much vasopressin is released, which causes the body to retain excessively large amounts of water. The sodium level in the blood becomes diluted – so-called hyponatraemia can arise, with partly serious neurological consequences.
Symptoms: Weakness, confusion and seizures are typical signs that require veterinary attention.
Treatment: The focus is on dampening vasopressin production and reducing fluid intake.
Vasopressin as a Therapeutic Agent in Veterinary Medicine
Vasopressin and its synthetic relatives are used in practice for several indications:
- Diabetes insipidus: Central diabetes insipidus in dogs is treated with desmopressin – it mimics the renal effect of the natural hormone and reliably improves water retention.
- Emergency medicine for shock: In septic or hypovolaemic shock, vasopressin helps to stabilise blood pressure and maintain blood flow to vital organs. It is often given together with adrenaline or noradrenaline.
- Blood pressure control under anaesthesia: If blood pressure drops during a surgical procedure, vasopressin can counteract this specifically – particularly in dogs with pre-existing cardiovascular problems.
- Bleeding control: In certain bleeding conditions, for example in connection with coagulation disorders, vasopressin can help to contain bleeding through its vessel-constricting effect.
Possible side effects
As with any active ingredient, there are also risks with vasopressin – especially at higher doses or with longer-term use:
- Hypertension: The vessel-constricting effect can raise blood pressure too much, which can become problematic with continuous administration.
- Kidney strain: If the body retains too much water, the kidneys are put under stress – particularly critical for dogs that already suffer from kidney disease.
- Gastrointestinal issues: Occasionally, dogs react to vasopressin with vomiting or diarrhoea.
- Reactions at the injection site: As vasopressin is often administered intravenously, local pain or irritation may occur.
