In dogs, this can become particularly tricky: The immune system is already fighting and weakened, making it easier for new germs to take hold. Viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites can act as triggers.
What is a superinfection?
Simplified: A superinfection is a second infection at the expense of the first. The dog’s weakened immune system simply cannot reliably ward off the new pathogen. A superinfection often arises when the original infection was not treated consistently enough – or when antibiotics keep the main germs in check but simultaneously decimate the body’s protective microorganisms, inadvertently making room for other pathogens.
Causes of superinfection in dogs
The ways in which a superinfection can arise are varied:
- Primary infections that weaken the immune system: Viral diseases such as distemper or kennel cough can significantly lower a dog’s defences. This opens the door to a second – often bacterial – infection.
- Incorrect or incomplete antibiotic treatment: If antibiotics are discontinued too early, there is a risk that resistant bacteria will survive and trigger a new infection. In addition, antibiotic treatment can significantly disrupt the dog’s natural microbiome – with the result that opportunistic pathogens fill the resulting gap.
- Chronic diseases: Dogs with diabetes, cancer or other long-term conditions have a structurally weakened immune system. They are often unable to fully combat primary infections, which predisposes them to superinfections.
- Immunosuppressive therapy: Dogs receiving immunosuppressive medication, for example due to an autoimmune disease, carry an increased risk – their immune system is deliberately suppressed, allowing new pathogens to establish themselves relatively easily.
Common examples of superinfections
Different combinations arise depending on the pathogens involved. Some typical scenarios from veterinary practice:
Viral-bacterial superinfection:
- Kennel cough: The viral respiratory infection weakens the mucosal defence – as a result, a bacterial superinfection can develop, potentially progressing to pneumonia.
- Distemper: In this severe viral infection, the immune system is often so severely compromised that secondary bacterial infections almost inevitably occur.
Bacterial-bacterial superinfection:
- An already damaged skin barrier – for example due to a Staphylococcus infection – can facilitate a second infection with Streptococcus, significantly worsening the skin condition.
Fungal infection following antibiotic treatment:
- Prolonged antibiotic treatments destroy not only harmful pathogens but also parts of the protective bacterial flora. Yeast fungi such as Candida exploit this altered environment and can multiply uncontrollably.
Symptoms of a superinfection in dogs
Which symptoms occur depends largely on which organs are affected and which pathogen has triggered the superinfection. Some signs to watch out for:
- Deterioration of the original symptoms: If the dog seemed to improve briefly, fever, coughing, nasal discharge or breathing difficulties suddenly return or worsen – this is a serious warning sign.

- Breathing difficulties or wheezing after a viral respiratory infection when bacteria are added.
- Increased scratching or skin redness, indicating an additional skin infection.
- Fever: Fever can be part of both the primary and secondary infection – particularly with bacterial superinfections, it often remains persistently elevated.
- Loss of appetite and lethargy: A dog that leaves its food untouched and barely gets up is often showing that its immune system is under severe strain. These general symptoms should never be dismissed as trivial.
- Coughing and breathing problems: If breathing difficulties increase and yellowish or greenish discharge appears, this often indicates bacterial involvement.
- Digestive problems: Vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain can occur if the gastrointestinal tract is affected by a superinfection.
Diagnosis of a superinfection
The diagnosis is not straightforward, as the symptoms often overlap with those of the original infection. The vet will therefore proceed systematically:
- Medical history and symptom assessment: A detailed anamnesis is important – which infection occurred previously, how was it treated, when did which changes occur?
- Blood tests: An increased proportion of white blood cells can indicate a bacterial superinfection; blood tests also provide information about the animal’s general condition.
- Microbiological tests: Swabs or samples from the skin, respiratory tract or digestive tract are examined in the laboratory for specific pathogens – only then can targeted therapy be planned.
- X-rays or ultrasound: If there is suspicion of a superinfection of the lungs or internal organs, imaging techniques often provide crucial clues.
Treatment of a superinfection
A superinfection generally requires an adapted, often extended therapy – treating the initial infection is no longer sufficient:
- Antibiotics: In the case of a bacterial superinfection, the vet may choose a different or broad-spectrum antibiotic. If resistance is present, an antibiogram helps determine the most effective agent.
- Antifungals: If antibiotic treatment has predisposed the dog to a fungal infection, antifungals are used to stop uncontrolled fungal growth.
- Antiviral medications: If a second virus is responsible for the superinfection, antiviral therapy may be considered – although this is less common in dogs.
- Supportive care: Fluid therapy, painkillers and anti-inflammatory preparations relieve the immune system and alleviate acute symptoms.
- Probiotics: After antibiotic treatment, probiotics can help rebuild the gut flora – thereby reducing the risk of a subsequent superinfection by fungi or resistant bacteria.
Prevention of superinfections
Superinfections cannot always be completely prevented – but targeted measures significantly reduce the risk:
- Consistently complete antibiotic treatment: Even if the dog already feels better, antibiotic treatment should always be completed fully and in accordance with veterinary instructions. Premature discontinuation promotes resistance.
- Strengthen the immune system: Balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and up-to-date vaccination coverage are no guarantee, but they form an important foundation – they help the dog better withstand infections from the outset.
- Do not underestimate hygiene: Especially in dogs with skin problems or open wounds, it is worthwhile to keep the environment clean. Consistent hygiene can slow down the spread of bacteria and fungi.
- Visit the vet early: If symptoms worsen or new ones appear, you should not wait. The earlier intervention takes place, the lower the chance that a superinfection will take hold.
