Tumours and cancer:

How peritoneal fluid is examined

  5. Bacteriological examination: If infection is suspected, the fluid is tested for bacteria. This allows the pathogen to be identified and the appropriate antibiotic selected.

Treatment – varies considerably depending on the cause

There is no blanket therapy for abnormal peritoneal fluid. What helps depends on what lies behind it:

  1. Ascites: The focus is on the underlying disease – whether it be heart failure, a liver disease or a kidney problem. Diuretics can help flush out excess fluid. In severe cases, a puncture is necessary to relieve pressure and provide the animal with rapid relief.
  2. Peritonitis: Waiting and seeing is not an option. Peritonitis is almost always treated with antibiotics and a surgical intervention – for example, to close a bowel perforation or remove a focus of infection.
  3. Bleeding: If blood is found in the peritoneal cavity, an emergency operation is required. The source of bleeding must be located and treated – whether after an accident, with a neoplasm or following organ rupture.
  4. Neoplasms: Depending on the findings, surgery, chemotherapy or other targeted therapies may be considered to curb neoplasm growth and reduce fluid accumulation.

Prognosis

How good the prospects are depends almost entirely on the underlying cause. One thing is certain: The earlier the diagnosis, the better the chances. With treatable conditions such as heart problems or certain liver diseases, fluid accumulation can often be controlled long-term. Severe infections or advanced neoplastic diseases make the prognosis significantly more cautious – and honest information from the vet is just as important here as the treatment itself.
