Lymphocytes are white blood cells that defend your dog’s immune system against viruses, bacteria and cancer cells. You usually encounter them in the blood count after a routine examination; the figures provide insight into your dog’s immune defence.

Why are lymphocytes important for my dog?

Lymphocytes form the special forces of the immune system. They identify intruders specifically and coordinate defence. Unlike other white blood cells that attack indiscriminately, lymphocytes remember pathogens and react faster on subsequent contact.

Three types work together: T-cells destroy infected body cells directly. B-cells produce antibodies that mark pathogens. NK cells (natural killer cells) hunt down degenerated cells and tumour cells.

What lymphocyte values are normal for dogs?

Normal is 1,000 to 4,800 lymphocytes per microlitre of blood. This range is wide because age, breed and health status influence the values. A healthy puppy often has more lymphocytes than a senior dog.

The vet always assesses lymphocytes in the context of other blood values. A slightly elevated value after a vaccination is normal; the same value with loss of appetite and fever can indicate an infection.

What do high lymphocyte values mean?

Elevated lymphocytes (lymphocytosis) usually signal that the immune system is fighting. Common causes are viral infections such as distemper or chronic inflammation.

It becomes concerning with very high values: lymphomas or lymphatic leukaemia cause a massive increase in the number of lymphocytes. Here, degenerated lymphocytes multiply uncontrollably. Further symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, weight loss and weakness.

Stress, vaccinations or allergic reactions can temporarily increase the values. This reactive lymphocytosis usually normalises within a few days.

What do low lymphocyte values mean?

Too few lymphocytes (lymphopenia) weaken the immune defence. Severe infections can overload the immune system and lower the number of lymphocytes. The body then consumes more immune cells than it produces.

Medications such as cortisone deliberately suppress the immune system and reduce lymphocytes. In chemotherapy, this is a known side effect. Autoimmune diseases can lead to the body attacking its own lymphocytes.

When should I worry?

Contact the vet if your dog shows these symptoms alongside unusual lymphocyte values: palpable swellings on the neck, in the armpits or groin (enlarged lymph nodes), persistent fatigue, weight loss without a change in food or recurring infections.

In cases of extreme deviations from the norm, particularly with values over 10,000 or under 500 lymphocytes per microlitre, further diagnostics are necessary. The vet will then suggest additional tests to clarify the cause.

Which diseases affect lymphocytes?

Lymphomas are the most common types of lymphocyte cancer in dogs. They usually arise in the lymph nodes but can also affect other organs. Leukaemias cause abnormal lymphocytes to flood into the blood.

Viral infections such as parvovirus or distemper influence lymphocyte function. In autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus, lymphocytes attack the body’s own structures. Congenital immune defects lead to permanently low lymphocyte counts.

How are lymphocyte disorders treated?

Treatment depends on the underlying disease. Bacterial infections require antibiotics, viral infections usually only supportive care. Immunosuppressive medications are used for autoimmune diseases.

Lymphomas are treated with chemotherapy, often more successfully and tolerably in dogs than in humans. In severe immunodeficiency, immunomodulators can stimulate lymphocyte production.
