Iodine tincture is an alcoholic solution with iodine as the antiseptic active ingredient, which disinfects superficial wounds in dogs.

Which iodine tincture is suitable for dogs?

For dogs, you use 2.5% iodine tincture, not the 5% variant from human medicine. The lower concentration reduces the risk of skin irritation on the thinner dog skin.

Veterinary products often contain additional skin-soothing components. Povidone-iodine solutions are a modern alternative that burns less and is better tolerated by the skin.

For which injuries do you apply iodine tincture?

Iodine tincture is only suitable for superficial scratches and small cuts. For paw injuries between the toes or after contact with dirty water, you disinfect the affected areas spot-on.

Deeper wounds or bite injuries belong at the vet; iodine tincture does not penetrate deeply enough to reach bacteria there.

How do you apply iodine tincture correctly?

You dab the solution with a cotton swab directly onto the cleaned wound. Do not rub, as this only intensifies tissue irritation. The characteristic brown film shows you where you have already disinfected.

After application, you wait two minutes before applying a bandage. This allows the iodine to take full effect.

When should you avoid using iodine tincture?

Dogs with thyroid problems do not tolerate iodine-containing disinfectants, as the iodine can be absorbed through the skin and affect thyroid function. Iodine tincture is also unsuitable for large areas of abraded skin, as the alcohol burns too intensely.

For ear injuries or wounds near the eyes, you use iodine-free disinfectants such as chlorhexidine solutions instead.

What alternatives to iodine tincture are there?

Polyhexanid-based wound rinses do not burn and are just as effective. Silver sulfadiazine ointment has an antibacterial effect without drying out the wound.

For the standard dog first-aid kit, a 0.05% chlorhexidine solution is more versatile than iodine tincture; it also acts against fungi and irritates the skin less.

Can iodine tincture cause allergies in dogs?

A true iodine allergy is rare. Skin redness is usually caused by too frequent application or too high a concentration, not by an allergic reaction.

How long does opened iodine tincture last?

After first opening, iodine tincture loses effectiveness due to alcohol evaporation. You should replace it after six months, even if the expiry date has not yet been reached.

Is iodine tincture poisonous if the dog licks it?

Small amounts of dried iodine tincture are harmless. However, prevent the dog from licking freshly applied solution, as the alcohol content can cause nausea in small dogs.
