A ganglion is a fluid-filled cyst that usually forms near tendons or joints. In dogs, ganglia most frequently appear on the paws or legs – theoretically, however, they can develop anywhere tendons or joints are located. As a rule, they are painless. If a cyst grows significantly or is constantly subjected to movement, this can certainly become uncomfortable and restrict mobility.

What is a ganglion?

Imagine a small, taut lump under the skin – soft, slightly movable, and containing a clear, gel-like fluid inside. That is exactly what a ganglion is: a benign cyst that forms when joint fluid accumulates in an encapsulated area around a tendon sheath or a joint. Sometimes such a ganglion grows for weeks before disappearing all by itself – this is not uncommon.

Fluid-filled: The contents originate from the surrounding joint or tendon sheath tissue – a clear, slightly viscous substance that can be easily distinguished from firmer tissue.

Benign: Ganglia are not tumours and are not malignant. Serious health consequences arise only in exceptional cases – for example, if the cyst presses unfavourably on nerves.

Location: They are particularly common on the paws, legs or directly next to a joint – i.e. where tendons are subjected to strain by constant movement.

Causes of ganglia in dogs

The exact reason why a ganglion develops cannot always be clearly determined. However, some factors are known to play a role:

Overuse of joints: Repeated strain – for example in dogs that jump a lot, run extensively or engage in intensive agility training – can irritate the joint and tendon structure and thus promote the formation of a cyst.

Trauma or injury: A blow or direct injury in the joint or tendon area can cause the body to accumulate and encapsulate fluid locally. The ganglion is then, so to speak, a protective reaction of the tissue.

Degenerative changes: In older dogs or those with existing joint diseases, the connective tissue is often less resilient. Wear and tear on tendons and joints significantly increases the risk of such cysts.

Genetic predisposition: Some dogs seem to be more susceptible – presumably due to anatomical peculiarities that lead to uneven strain on the tendons. Whether a genuine genetic link exists has not yet been conclusively proven.

Symptoms of ganglia in dogs

Many ganglia are discovered rather by chance – while stroking or brushing, a small lump suddenly appears that no one had noticed before. Pain does not necessarily have to be present. What you should still look out for:

Soft swelling: The cyst feels taut but soft and can usually be moved slightly. It lies well-defined under the skin, directly next to a joint or tendon.

Size fluctuations: A ganglion can grow noticeably within a few days or weeks – and then become smaller again or disappear completely. These fluctuations are typical and no cause for immediate panic.

Lameness or stiffness: If the cyst presses on a nerve or joint, the dog may start to limp or move more stiffly. This happens especially when the ganglion is located on the paw or leg and every movement slightly compresses it.

Sensitivity to pressure: Some ganglia react to direct pressure or movement with pain – especially if they have grown large or are in an unfavourable location, such as directly under a joint.

Diagnosis of a ganglion

The first step is always a physical examination by the vet. Palpating the joint and asking a few targeted questions about the medical history often provide strong clues. Depending on the findings, further steps may follow:

Palpation: Experienced vets often recognise a ganglion simply by palpation – the cyst typically feels soft, taut and well-defined. Location and consistency provide important clues.

Ultrasound or X-ray: If the swelling is unclear, an ultrasound helps to accurately assess the location and size of the cyst. X-rays are mainly considered if there is suspicion of bone involvement or a tumour.

Fine-needle aspiration: If the diagnosis remains uncertain, the vet can withdraw some fluid from the cyst using a fine needle. The sample is then evaluated microscopically – and ideally confirms the benign nature of the ganglion.

Treatment of ganglia in dogs

The extent of intervention depends on how large the cyst is, whether it causes discomfort and how the dog is generally feeling. Often, waiting first is sufficient.

Observation: Ganglia often regress on their own. If the cyst is small, causes no pain and does not bother the dog when walking, the vet often recommends a controlled waiting period – including regular check-ups.

Aspiration treatment: If the ganglion has grown significantly or is uncomfortable, the vet can drain the fluid with a needle. This provides quick relief – however, recurrence is not uncommon because the cyst is not removed at its root.

Cortisone injections: Following aspiration, a cortisone preparation is sometimes administered directly into the affected area. This is intended to curb renewed fluid accumulation and dampen local inflammatory reactions.

Surgical removal: If the ganglion keeps recurring or causes persistent problems, a surgical procedure may be advisable. This is the most intensive option and is only considered if other measures have not yielded lasting success.

Physiotherapy: If the cyst restricts mobility, accompanying physiotherapy can help strengthen the muscles and maintain joint function – particularly after a procedure.

Risks and prognosis

The good news first: A ganglion is benign and does not pose a serious health risk for most dogs. Nevertheless, it is worth keeping a few points in mind.

Recurrence: Especially after aspiration, the cyst can come back – this is not a treatment error, but inherent to the nature of these cysts. Sometimes another procedure is then required.

Complications with large ganglia: If a cyst grows significantly and presses on nerves or blood vessels, pain and lameness can result. In that case, more intensive treatment is necessary – passive observation then reaches its limits.

Surgical risks: As with any surgical procedure, there are risks here too: infections, post-operative bleeding or nerve damage in the surgical area are possible, although rare. The vet will carefully weigh the benefit-risk ratio beforehand.
