Beta-blockers
Beta-blockers are active ingredients that block beta receptors on cells and thereby reduce the influence of the sympathetic nervous system – the so-called fight-or-flight mode.

Beta-blockers directly interfere with the body’s signalling pathways: they block the so-called beta receptors on cells – precisely those docking sites where adrenaline and noradrenaline would otherwise bind. The result? The sympathetic part of the nervous system – the famous “fight-or-flight mode” – loses influence. For the dog’s body, this has concrete consequences:
- Lowering heart rate (the pulse becomes noticeably calmer)
- Reducing the contractile force of the heart muscle
- Stabilisation in cases of arrhythmia

When are beta-blockers used in dogs?
The use is clearly defined – beta-blockers are not used for every heart problem, but primarily when specific diagnoses are present:
- Arrhythmias – such as atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardias
- Heart failure, but never as a single measure, rather as part of a broader treatment concept
- Hypertension – less commonly, most likely when kidney disease is the underlying cause (secondary hypertension)
- Obstructive cardiomyopathy, as can occur in Boxers or Dobermans with a genetic predisposition
Known active ingredients in dogs
In small animal medicine, three active ingredients have become established – each with a slightly different profile:
- Atenolol: selective beta-1 blocker, often the first choice for heart problems, provided no lung disease is present
- Propranolol: acts non-selectively and is therefore also suitable for certain tumour diseases such as pheochromocytoma
- Carvedilol: additionally dilates the blood vessels and is used primarily for more complex heart conditions
Which active ingredient is ultimately chosen depends on the precise clinical picture, possible interactions with other medications, and the individual tolerance of the animal.
Risks and side effects
Like all heart medications, beta-blockers also have their downsides – especially when the dosage is incorrect or pre-existing conditions come into play:
- Bradycardia: the heartbeat becomes dangerously slow
- Weakness, fatigue, significant drop in performance
- Bronchoconstriction: a real danger for dogs with respiratory diseases
- Circulatory weakness or hypothermia – especially in older or already weakened animals
Regular check-ups with the vet are therefore not a ‘nice-to-have’, but mandatory. Even more important: beta-blockers must never be discontinued unilaterally. An abrupt stop can acutely worsen the dog’s condition. If the dog shows abnormalities such as apathy, staggering, or an unusually slow pulse, veterinary advice should be sought immediately – without waiting.
