Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction – and it strikes quickly. Within minutes of contact with a trigger, a dog’s body can completely lose balance: It releases large amounts of histamines and other messenger substances, triggering a massive inflammatory cascade.

Several organ systems are affected simultaneously: the heart and circulatory system, the airways, the digestive tract and the skin. Without immediate veterinary help, this can be fatal – no exaggeration.

Where does it start? Causes of anaphylaxis in dogs

The trigger is always an allergen to which the dog’s immune system overreacts. In practice, the following sources are most common:

  • Insect stings and bites: Bees, wasps, or ants – in dogs allergic to insect venom, a single sting can be enough to trigger an anaphylactic reaction.
  • Medications: Antibiotics, vaccines, painkillers, or anaesthetics are repeatedly associated with severe allergic reactions.
  • Food allergies: Grains, certain types of meat, preservatives – some dogs react anaphylactically to quite ordinary feed ingredients.
  • Vaccines: Rare, but possible: In individual cases, a vaccination can trigger anaphylaxis, especially if the dog reacts allergically to certain adjuvants in the vaccine preparation.
  • Chemicals and environmental agents: Insect sprays, cleaning products, or care products – in sensitive dogs, skin contact alone may sometimes be sufficient.

How do I recognise it? Symptoms of anaphylaxis

Symptoms often appear out of nowhere and worsen rapidly. Early recognition is literally a matter of life and death. The most common signs:

  • Skin reactions: Itching, swelling (particularly on the face, ears, lips, eyelids, and paws), and hives may occur. The skin may be red.
  • Breathing difficulties: Shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and panting, as the airways swell due to the allergic reaction. Completely blocked airways are life-threatening.
  • Shock: Anaphylaxis can lead to anaphylactic shock, where blood pressure drops suddenly. Consequence: weakness, fainting, racing heart, and collapse.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms: Vomiting, diarrhoea, and abdominal pain are common.
  • Lethargy and weakness: The dog may suddenly become extremely weak, apathetic, or lethargic and refuse to stand or walk.
  • Pale mucous membranes: The mucous membranes (lips, gums) may appear pale or bluish – an indication of poor oxygen supply.

What now? Immediate measures for anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a medical emergency – not a situation to wait and see. If there is a justified suspicion: seek a vet or emergency clinic immediately. What typically happens there:

  • Epinephrine (adrenaline): Epinephrine is the first-choice medication. The injection opens the airways, stabilises blood pressure, and stops shock. It acts rapidly – and can save lives.
  • Oxygen therapy: In cases of shortness of breath, the dog receives oxygen so that organs continue to be supplied.
  • Fluid therapy: Intravenous infusions support circulation and stabilise blood pressure.
  • Antihistamines and corticosteroids: Antihistamines slow down the allergic reaction, corticosteroids reduce inflammation and support recovery.
  • Closely monitored observation: After initial treatment, the dog remains under observation – complications can still occur hours later.

What happens next? Long-term treatment and prevention

Once the acute crisis has passed, the work continues. Possible next steps that the vet may recommend:

  • Allergy tests: A targeted test can help identify the specific trigger – this is the basis for everything that follows.
  • Consistent allergen avoidance: If the allergen is known, the dog must be kept away from it permanently. This may mean eliminating certain foods, actively preventing insect bites, or switching to alternative medications.
  • EpiPen for dogs: For dogs at high risk, many vets recommend keeping an EpiPen within reach. The device contains adrenaline and bridges the critical minutes until veterinary care is provided.
  • Regular check-ups: After anaphylaxis, the dog should receive close veterinary monitoring – to ensure it has fully recovered and has not suffered any lasting damage.

What are the chances? Prognosis and quality of life

If action is taken in time, most dogs survive anaphylaxis without lasting damage. What matters is how quickly treatment begins – every minute counts. Dogs with a known tendency to allergies need special attention: Knowing the possible triggers and being prepared for emergencies gives you a real advantage.
